Minutes from 5/13/10 Meeting of the Parks, Recreation & Trails Committee

1.         Meeting Opened -- Meeting was called to order at 7:48 p.m.  In attendance: Lawrie Bolger, PJ Gill-Gorenc, Zeke Hubbard, Joe Stumpo, Ricki Stumpo.

 

2.         Announcements -- None

3.         Public Comments –  None

 

4.         New Business

 

a.   Sandy Royer, URA Girls Softball League President provided comment that the Pocopson Park baseball field base lines were in need of raking and additional Diamatex, and inquired if URA could help with the maintenance of the field.  Additionally, Royer offered URA to assist with the opening of the field in mid-March. Committee agreed to discuss with the Public Works Department the addition of a temporary shed to store rakes and a supply of Diamatex at the field.

 

b.   Eagle Scout Projects – Chris Hartsky Troop 31 is interested in conducting an Eagle Scout project for the township.  Committee recommended the following project ideas for his consideration:

• Trail Markers – with mileage and trail names

• Development & Installation of Exercise Course

• Shade structure for tot lot benches

            c.  Pavilion usage -- committee confirmed that self-insured groups need    to provide a certificate of insurance in order to rent the pavilion.        

 

5.         Old Business

 

a.   Lian-Cannon Hill Trail -- surveying contracts from Regester Associates and Vandemark & Lynch were reviewed and committee voted to submit the 4/6/10 Regester estimate of $4,000 to the Board of Supervisors for approval.  Committee also agreed to request the posting of trail signs concurrent with surveying project.

b.   Zoning code amendments - no input from committee needed.

c.    Permit Posting --  The committee discussed the posting of permits on clipboards throughout the park at designated rental sites (i.e., tennis courts, pavilion, baseball field); recommendation will be forwarded to BOS for review.  

 

                       

6.         Sub-Committee Reports

 

a.   Trails

                        i. The state’s review of the Trails Feasibility Study is expected to

                        be completed by next week.

ii.   Zeke Hubbard reported that Georgia Brutscher has requested a trail link from the Barnard Trail and the Locust Grove Schoolhouse.  Land owner to be contacted for access through bamboo grove.

iii.Memorial Trail -- first memorial tree planting will take place in fall 2010 for Carl Blackburn.  Family has advised they would like a Pin Oak planted.  Qualifications for township service will be discussed at the June meeting. 

                       

b.   Stream Team – Lawrie Bolger reported that the stream sampling results of 5/1 were good, indicating high water quality.  Next sampling scheduled for 5/22 at the Mims.

c.    CleanWays – Lawrie Bolger reported that the 3rd annual clean-up was successful, with over 100 volunteers participating.  Committee agreed that monies for BVA barbeque for clean-up volunteers should be budgeted for 2011 clean-up. Bolger to discuss costs with Jim Jordan.
