Replacement of Route 926 Bridge near Pocopson Road

Representatives from PennDOT, Birmingham and Pocopson Townships, Chester County and our State Representatives met on February 9, 2011 to review the latest proposed plans for the Route 926 replacement bridge over the Brandywine Creek and to discuss Township concerns about the increasing number of road closures at the bridge due to flooding. The PennDOT design team is evaluating options for reconfiguring the approach roadways or employing other methods to reduce flood caused road closures. Construction work is now not expected to begin before 2013.

                                    Snow Removal in Pocopson Township

Plowing and Salting Procedures:

Mission Statement:  To clear over ninety miles of roads of snow and/or ice in a safe and efficient manner with priority given to the health and safety of the Township citizens and traveling public.

  • For winter storms, the Township is sectioned into three routes. One large plow truck is assigned to each route and two smaller trucks rotate among the routes as needed.
  • Road clearing will be undertaken around-the-clock unless conditions render clearing efforts useless. In such cases, plows will remain on standby for emergency situations.
  • Each route includes high and lesser priority roads. When a snowstorm begins, operators will cover their entire route with salt and anti-skid materials. This keeps the snow and ice from freezing to the streets. Plowing begins when the snow accumulates to a depth of two inches.
  • For minor storms, the entire route may be completed at once. During intense storms, only priority roads will be cleared. Secondary roads and cul-de-sacs will not be plowed until main roads can be kept open. As the storm lightens, all roads will be opened. Roads will be plowed curb-to-curb. Cul-de-sacs and intersections will be cleared after the storm passes.

Citizen participation:

  • It is not uncommon for plows to push snow in front of driveways. Typically snow is moved to the right of a moving plow and onto the shoulder or edge of the roadway. Prevent your driveways from being plowed shut by removing snow to the downside of the driveway.
  • During a winter storm, do not park on the street. Vehicles in the street delay road clearing. Remove vehicles from the street before the storm and keep them off the streets until streets are cleared. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed and fees of $125 and up will apply.
  • Do not shovel or push snow into the street. This is a safety hazard and could cause an accident. Homeowners can be fined for this and be held responsible for an accident.
  • The Township will replace mailboxes or posts that have been struck by the plow, but not items that are damaged by the force of plowed snow. Check mailboxes and posts for deterioration to reduce the chance that the weight of plowed snow will break the post.
  • Damage to vehicles caused by snow and/or cinders from plow trucks are not the Township’s responsibility—which is one of the reasons we ask that vehicles be removed from the streets. Plows must clear streets curb-to-curb to prepare for subsequent storms.
  • The Township does not remove snow and ice from undedicated roads. Residents in the following communities may contact the snow removal vendor listed below:
